RW For Beginners Only: Should I stay in a hotel... →
I’d read the Runner’s World beginner blog more if they posted less crap like this. Why don’t you carpool with the waaaaambulance?
(Disclaimer: I used to work for the company that publishes RW, although I clearly didn’t absorb any healthy habits from it. My fault, not theirs.)
I will not take my mom to task for sending Valentine’s Day candy. I will not take my mom to task for sending Valentine’s Day candy. I will not take my mom to task for sending Valentine’s Day candy…
My next races
Cupid’s Chase 5K, Feb. 13, Riverside Park
Coogan’s Salsa, Blues & Shamrocks 5K, March 7, Washington Heights
How did I pick these? Location, mostly. I knew I wanted to do another 5K in March and I probably wouldn’t be able to travel anywhere. This one goes around the Cloisters, which should be awfully pretty even if it’s cold out and I am slow. The other 5K is just for...

Spring Shape-Up: Week 1, +.2
Inauspicious beginning.
Here were my goals for this week: Write down my food every day Try a dance class as well as running 3x a week Find a schedule for 10K training
How’d I do? I did them all! I tracked my food every day. I went to Zumba and it was… kind of fun, actually, I’m going to go again this week.
I ran 3 times (Friday, Sunday, last night). My longest run was 3.5...
Jezebel: Whole Foods Offers (Employees) Discount... →
I will have to revisit this article when I am within the BMI to get extra discounts and see if I still find it as offensive as I do right now. Prob’ly will!
I don’t know if my current job has any health incentives attached. But I know they participate in the Corporate Challenge, and I hope I’ll be eligible for that!
Re: New York Sports Club
Last week I mentioned how disappointed I was that I saw a weight-loss supplement salesperson on the cardio floor at my gym. I sent a letter of complaint and the next day an assistant manager at my gym called and we had a chat about it.
He said that for “member appreciation day” a rep from the gym had gone out looking for local vendors to come and give stuff away or offer discounts to...
CNN: The surprising reason why being overweight... →
This article on doctor bias and challenges in treating overweight and obese patients will scare the pants off you. Skipping common screening tests like Pap smears? Dismissively telling patients not to eat fast food instead of administering treatment? Refusing to grant a transplant? Holy wow. No wonder overweight and obese women “are more likely to delay doctors’ appointments and...

Spring Shape-Up Challenge
I joined Theodora’s Spring Shape-Up Challenge because I wanted to get 2010 off to a great start, health-wise.
Overall goals: Lose 10 pounds by my birthday in March (a little over 1 pound a week) Write down my food every day (I did really well with eating last year as long as I did this) Break 35:00 in a 5K (yeah, I’m REALLY slow) and train for a 10K Run 3x a week, but also…...

Dear New York Sports Club
Get excited about the strongly worded letter I will be sending you about the weight-loss supplement hawker set up on the gym floor this morning.
In the words of Dignan, “That’s inappropriate! That’s inexcusable! What were you thinking? What were you thinking?”
Spring Shape-Up: Let's Kick Things Up a Notch!
losingweightinthecity:
Other than this whole half-marathon business, I’ve been slacking off a little. I’ve been getting bored with the healthy eating and gym, perhaps because I don’t have a real hard and fast goal.
So here it is. My goal weight by my birthday, February 11. 24 days.
My next goal (of my second half-marathon, do you like how I casually dropped that in there?) just happens to be...
Fantastic new modern invention
Like a lot of fattish people, I saved a lot of pairs of pants on my way up the scale, reasoning that some day I would be able to fit into them. On the way back down, I have indeed rediscovered pants I loved, but it’s a complicated love: Sizes are far from uniform across brands, and some pairs that fit look ludicrously out of date. (Did no one tell us how flare-y our flares were in the early...
I should've asked for a brown paper wrapper
I think I’m going to start subscribing to Runner’s World because I’m convinced clerks give me the condescending eye when I buy it at newsstands. Alternately, I could put one of my race shirts on and go buy it, but that seems like a lot of work.
