Runnerversary, and a race (of course)

Happy Fourth to my fellow “Amercians.” Three years ago today I laced up for my first 5K ever in my hometown. Unlike a lot of anniversaries, I hadn’t anticipated that I would be celebrating it as such, but here we are, and it’s good.

I couldn’t be home this year for that outing, so this morning I ran a hot10K on Roosevelt Island. The joke’s on me because there was thunder and rain in the forecast and a steady drizzle, and as I warmed up I thought, “Well, it sure would be nice if it cleared up and the sun came out.” Cut to: HEAT LAMP IN THE SKY. I added about 3 minutes to my 10K time from a month ago, but I was happy to get the time in. I even warmed up beforehand, which turned out to be a fruitless exercise, but was still a habit I wanted to get into.

I thought the race was fairly well organized except for not having anybody at the finish to point me toward WATER. Roosevelt Island is a bizarre little burg, a cross between a college built in the ’70s and the set of the ’60s TV show “The Prisoner,” but the scenery of the East River (and UN Building) and Queens on the other side was new and different. Plus, on the way home I got to ride the tram (as seen in “Spider-man 2”) back over the river. What a view!

I came home, napped, ate, drank, read outside, read in the A/C… you get the idea. I tried drinking some Nuun for the first time to see if it could make me feel less like hot garbage after a run (as I have oft been feeling). It did get me to down a 16 ounce glass of water in record time, but I’m not sure about the rest. Any good hydration tricks you want to pass along?
