1. Get in losers, we’re going shopping

I don’t NEED a new pair of capris to run the marathon in, but I would really like some with more storage. Got any recommendations?

    Here’s my wish list:

    • Black, but some kind of colored detail is OK
    • Knee-length or nearby
    • Some kind of performance fabric - ie, not cotton
    • Drawstring, not just elastic
    • At least 2 secure close pockets, but the more the merrier — this is where all my existing bottoms have failed me
    • Cost… lower is better but features are more important.
    • Obviously, on sale now or very soon so I can test them out before M-Day
    • Brand is not really important, nor is clothing made specifically for running
    • Did I mention pockets? Because, those.

How did people shop for clothing before there was the Internet?! Related, how irritated should I feel that the running store where I get my shoes doesn’t carry ANY shorts, even ugly ones, in a women’s large?

  2. OMG, shoes

My current running shoes (Asics Gel Kayano 17s) are inching up toward the 300-mile mark. I also occasionally rotate in my previous 17s (inching up toward 500 miles) for short runs, because they don’t feel thrashed yet, although I wouldn’t wear them for more than a 4-miler. They don’t make this model any more (pour one out) and I’ve stockpiled 1 pair of those, and 1 pair of the GT-2160s (same year, slightly less padding).

If I have 2 brand-new pairs of shoes with which to start marathon training, plus my current kicks, am I covered? There are still a few pairs of 17s out there at discount, but the stock is getting few and far between. I could switch up to the 18s but would rather do that sooner, rather than late in marathon training. Should I buy more shoes?

I was very hesitant to buy one in the beginning, due to their high price tag, but was told I needed a pace watch to monitor my speed.

So a few weeks ago I gave in and bought one. The Forerunner 110 (the pink one!) to be exact. And? and it is AWESOME!

It’s made running a fun game for me; I look forward to hitting start and stop on my watch, and then downloading the information onto my computer.

It has GPS, so my routes are automatically mapped, and it tells me my calories burnt, average speed (or speed per kilometer), elevation, time etc.

I consider it a mark of how far I’ve come, that last year I didn’t even know what one of these did. I think I will wait till the fall though when I can run outside more.

Um. I think I need to.

Covet!!
I think I will need new running shoes soon. I’ve read 300-500 miles or 6 months; I’ve been running on mine (ASICS Gel Kayano 15 although I’m open to other brands) for almost a year, though in that time I probably haven’t topped 300 miles. Tracking since the beginning of the year I’ve put almost 200 on them, but I didn’t run as much last year.
I also need new cross-trainers for the gym because the ones I’m using right now are at least 10 years old. (When you buy gym shoes and never go to the gym, they last a lot longer…) Shoe shopping, what’s not to love?
