When I started doing races, I did all of them alone. It was all right, because I knew I was doing what was best for me… but sometimes I would see groups of runners chatting it up in the corrals and I’d wish to be among them.
And last night, I was! The Wall Street Run was probably the most purely social race I’ve done since the Midnight Run. Knowing Kimijoy was visiting was the perfect reason to organize a Tumblr meetup, and at the last minute, the rain tapered off and we were standing in the humid canyons of downtown Manhattan.
I wanted to take it easy and had a weird fear of getting injured since I knew the race was going to be crowded, so I tried to just cruise. I had my iPod but I never even turned it on. Another fun thing about lower Manhattan: I have a terrible sense of direction, and if I had been forced to find my own way off the race course I’d probably still be down there. The grid! Bring me the grid!
In the end I ran a respectable 34:40 and notched up qualifier #5 of 9. And I didn’t get hurt (although, I have this weird ache in my inner thighs… running is so glamorous!!!!!)
After the race we all moseyed over for dinner at Brick NYC, a restaurant with terrible service if good food. I don’t know if they were overwhelmed or having a bad night or what, but our water was late, our orders were taken late, a pizza came out WITH A SLICE MISSING (I will never stop telling that story, because please)… well, good thing the company was so great.
Official Tumblr roll call: Kimijoy, Runningbeautiful, Amileormoreinmyshoes, Veggielife, Aneclairtoremember, Tribander, Fasterstronger (and her Tumblrless friend) and Regainingmymoxy (who couldn’t run the race but swung by after personal training). <3 to all.
